Sunday School was every bit as important as regular school classes in 1863. The first church in Pettis County was built by John Brown (G.H. Marshall’s grandfather) at Brown’s Springs. In 1840, the Methodist Episcopal South Church was organized by George and Elizabeth Brown Marshall, among others. This church evolved into the New Bethel Church which exists today.
C.C. Crawford was Christopher Columbus Crawford, a blacksmith and prosperous
farmer in the Flat Creek area.
