Documents added

I had a little time today to update the site. There are several new additions, including a brief page on Ike’s trip to Pike’s Peak, a mining claim, another tax receipt, and the first letter from John Brown Marshall’s family.

Gold fever swept over the country in the 1850’s and 60’s, and the folks of Pettis County were not immune. Every young man with a pickax and a dream went west searching for gold. Very few found it, and none of them seem to have come from Pettis County.

From the letters home, the mining claims, and the tales recounted by others, it seems to have been a hard, dangerous, lonely grab at fame and fortune. In time, there will have to be a “gold fever” section that draws all of these pieces into a whole.
